Larbert's Tryst Theatre 'C' team scooped first place at a drama festival at Falkirk Town Hall at the weekend.

The nineteen-strong team won the Scottish Community Drama Association one-act play festival with their play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard.

Grangemouth's Bowhouse Players were second with "As The Bat At Noon" by Charles Barron. Grangmouth's Young Portonians, Falkirk Players and another team from Tryst Theatre also participated in the prestigious two-night festival. Adjudicator Jim Gibson said: "I was very impressed by the high standard of all five plays. This District is very fortunate to have clubs performing plays of such high quality.

"Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead is a very complex play which the Tryst ensemble handled with style and invention. I was totally engrossed. They clearly understood what it is all about."

The winning play collected three trophies - the East Stirlingshire District Trophy, the Barker Quaich for production and the Rose Bowl Award for stage decor, lighting and costumes.

Bowhouse won the Porteous Salver for being runner-up while the Young Portonians picked up the remaining two trophies - the Margaret Miller Quaich presented by the adjudicator and the Lillias Scougall Trophy awarded by the audience for the most popular play.

Falkirk man Andrew Hunter MBE presented the prizes. Tryst 'C' director Alan Allan said: "We have wanted to do this play for seventeen years and this year the opportunity arose for the first time to bring it to fruition. It came together superbly on the night and the club is delighted to progress to the next round.

District Chairman Carol Clark said: "It was a very varied and stimulating programme. All five clubs are to be congratulated for maintaining such a high standard."
